Sew Together
Sew Together is a free beginners sewing programme for Lewisham residents who might not be able to afford usual sewing classes or who feel isolated. Our aim for these classes is to provide a warm and friendly place for people to learn valuable life skills and improve social connections. As well as helping to reduce stress and increase confidence.
Thanks to the National Lottery Community fund we are able to run this project until Summer 2026!

Sew Together 2023
The first round of Sew Together ran between September 2023 - July 2024. The project was generously funded by the L & Q foundation.
During this round, we:
Engaged 49 participants in our free sewing courses with the the majority of people attending between 10 - 18 sessions.
We partnered with a number of local charities and support organisations around the Borough including social proscribing network Community Connections Lewisham to promote the classes.
We facilitated 6 drop in workshops with organisation such as Community Connections, Lewisham Local, Bring Me Sunshine around the Borough to promote the courses to people who might not see our usual marketing. Or might not think sewing is for them!
We funded transport costs for 7 participants who needed it, minimising inaccessibility.
Participants in the first round of of the classes noted these positive outcomes in their feedback:
Empowerment and Confidence: They felt empowered by acquiring sewing skills and gaining confidence in their abilities, tackling new projects, and experiencing a sense of pride in their accomplishments.
Positive Learning Environment: The classes were relaxed, stress-free, and flexible, allowing participants to work at their own pace, which contributed to their enjoyment and anticipation for each session.
Community and Social Connection: The course provided a sense of belonging and community, especially valuable for those feeling isolated. Socialising and being part of the community significantly improved participants' mood and mental health, reducing feelings of isolation and fostering an inclusive environment.
Creativity and Practical Benefits: Participants appreciated the encouragement to be creative and the practical benefits of sewing skills, such as repairing and creating useful items. Learning to mend and upcycle garments also promoted environmental responsibility.
Career and Personal Growth: Some participants used their new skills for career opportunities, such as work placements in theatre design. The course had a profound impact on their emotional and social well-being, offering significant personal growth and development.
Supportive Instruction: Teachers were praised for their dedication, support, and ability to create a welcoming and encouraging environment, fostering creativity and a strong sense of community among participants.
Here’s what previous participants had to say:

“I have had such an amazing time attending this course, it is something I look forward to every week! Jaime and Amelia are so kind, welcoming and helpful, guiding everyone while also allowing space to be creative, explore ideas and patterns. When I have felt isolated, this class has been a space where I’ve been able to socialise and meet people from all walks of life, significantly improving my mood and mental health. The classes have been so accessible, diverse, accommodating and joyous.”
“It’s been genuinely life changing, as someone who lives on their own, being a part of this community has given me a weekly mood boost.
